Guernsey is located in the English Channel off the Normandy coast is one of the favorite tourist destinations. Castle Cornet is also known as Cornet Rock or Castle Rock is an ancient harbor fortress and is one of the famous places in Guernsey. This fortress is a part of the breakwaters which is located at St Peter Port harbor and is one of the main islands since 1859.
Even though formerly it was a castle, but later it was transformed into a fortress, after the garrisons were captured and killed. Later this place was used as a residence of the Governor of the island up to 1672 and now it is regarded as a heritage building, which houses a number of museums, art galleries, etc and is open for public viewing.
- Fort Grey and Shipwreck Museum
There are many famous castles and ancient buildings in the island, out of which Fort Grey and Shipwreck Museum is one such building. This museum was built in 1804 in order to protect the island from French attacks and any other external attacks.
The original structure was restored in 1976 and from then it is one of the popular tourist destinations. The island is located in such a place which overlooks the Hanois Reef. There is a saying that many ships have sunk in this particular reef and there is a museum which is located there and tells about the maritime history of the region to its visitors.
Guernsey Aquarium is one of the other famous places in Guernsey which is located amidst an old German tunnel and is close to the La Vallette bathing pools. This place has some wonderful collection of fishes of more than forty seven varieties and is a major tourist draw, both young and old. There are different varieties of fish and various other aquatic plants and animals, some of which are rare species. A small park is there, where you can take rest and munch some favorite delicacies, from the food stalls that are there.
- Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery
This is one of the museums which is located in Candie Gardens and was opened for public viewing in 1978. At that time it was one of the very few museums which housed post war items in Britain.
Apart from the post war items, the museum has a display of all items, both natural and man made, which shows the history of the island and various other historical items with which the museum was built.
There is also an audio-visual show, which narrates the history of the island and a shop which sells souvenirs and different other antique items. If you are hungry after having a look at the entire museum, then you can drop in at the café and have some light food and refreshment.
