Dublin Airport also known as Aerfort Bhaile Atha Cliath in Irish is considered as the busiest airport of Ireland. It is located in Collinstown and operated by the Dublin Airport Authority plc. Year 2006, the Dublin Airport witnessed a tremendous growth in the number of passengers traveling through the airport. The Dublin Airport is noted for catering the international passengers much more than the domestic ones. It was on 19th January, 1940 when the inaugural flight took off from the Dublin Airport. Almost every decade experienced additional improvisation in the different terminals of Dublin Airport. Ireland’s flag carrier Aer Lingus has its headquarters at the Dublin Airport. Other airlines like the Ryanair, CityJet and Aer Arann also house some important offices in this Dublin Airport. All the domestic airports of Ireland are well served by the flight. The Dublin-London route is one of the busiest in the entire world; hence everyday almost 50 flights depart from Dublin Airport for the five different airports of London.
The major airlines which fly to and from the Dublin Airport are Aer Lingus, Delta Air Lines, Continental Airlines, US Airways, Swiss International Air
Lines, Flybe, Czech Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Air Southwest, Ryanair, and XL Airways. Including these airlines, there are almost 90 airlines operating from this airport and serving more than 160 destinations across the world.
The most important routes from the Dublin airport are the Edinburgh, London, Birmingham, Paris, Malaga, New York, Manchester, Glasgow, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt.
With the present infrastructure, the Dublin Airport is unable to handle the massive crowd, which is increasing with every year. For this reason constructions are being carried out every now and then for expanding the number of terminals and runways. A new terminal and runway is supposed to be built within a couple of years. The Dublin Airport Authority is working arduously in order to cater the required facilities to the increasing passengers.
Dublin Airport is located just 10 kms away from the city center. Passengers can avail taxis and buses to reach the airport. There are national coach services and city bus services, which are catered by the Dublin Airport exclusively for the passengers. Plans are being chalked out for building a rail link which would connect the Dublin Airport with some major locations of the city. The 142 check-in desks take care of the security and cater assistance to the millions of passengers. Just outside the airport there is an extremely spacious area for car parking.
