Ireland's Eye

reland's Eye is a pictorial small island, completely uninhabited within easy reach from by regularly sailing local boats for the tourists, from the shoreline of County Dublin in Ireland. Ireland's Eye, located just in the north of the famous Howth Harbor, is at present included a portion of Fingal, a county of the Republic of Ireland. This was done to serve various administrative purposes though it was once the core part of the Dublin City.

The remains of an eight century historic church and a beautiful Martello tower are the only found evidences of settlement on this site. The windrow entrance of the tower is placed 5 meters from the ground which may be reached with the help of a rope that is seen hanging down from this window. The church served as a parish church for the area of Howth till the past centuries. It was gradually substituted by a village church because of the restrictions of reaching the church with a boat ride for each of the services.

During the Celtic period, Ireland's Eye was known as Eria’s Island. Eria
was the name of a lady, which got confused with Erin, name of Ireland in the Irish language. The word ‘Island’ was replaced by the Vikings with ‘Ey’, and thus it came to be known as Erin’s Eye and finally as Ireland's Eye. In the month of September in 1852, a lady known as Sarah Maria Louisa Kirwan was murdered on Ireland's Eye, and William Burke Kirwan, her husband, was accused of the murder. Ireland's Eye includes the actual island, some rows of rocks and Thulla, an islet. The most interesting feature in this site is “The Stack”, a massive rock that stands alone at the northeastern bend. This rock acts as a place for rest for different forms of seabirds, as well as a large number of razorbills, guillemots, gulls and fulmars. The fifth colony of gannet in Ireland was established on this rock during the 1980s and currently hundreds of pairs of gannet are found to breed her every year.

A big colony of cormorant is found on the island and also some breeding puffins’ pairs. Grey seals are also seen in large numbers in the sea, which encloses the entire island. Ireland's Eye is a townland having 53 acres of land that is already registered. The island is offered conveyance from two boat companies providing their service from the Howth Harbour during the summer months. Access of Ireland's Eye is not restricted but it is actually a portion of the Howth Estate.
