National Library

The National Library is the national library of Ireland situated in Dublin and housed by a famous building built according to the design of Thomas Newenham Deane. The library operates under the charge of the Minister for Arts, Sports & Tourism. The objective of the National Library of Ireland is to accumulate, protect and keep books, illustrations and manuscripts about anything Irish.

This national library is used by full-time researchers, other types of visitors who may want to read a newspaper article or a book or people coming to the library with particular needs. The National Library in Ireland is free and open for all those who are in need of library collections for matters that cannot be availed at the public libraries or the school or college libraries. But in order to access almost all the library materials one needs a Reader's Ticket.

The National Library does not provide books for home use and the reading is meant to be done in any of the reading rooms of the library. A service for copying the materials is also available at this national library by which you can obtain slides, photocopies, microfilm and photographs of most of the collected materials. The National Library is currently hosting a number of continuing exhibitions. The Office of the Chief Herald at Kildare Street, the National Photographic Archive at Temple Bar and the Genealogical Office are sections of the National Library of Ireland.

The National Library in Ireland was founded in 1877 by the Dublin Science and Art Museum Act. According to this act, most of the collections possessed by the Royal Dublin Society should be handed over to the Department of Science and Art for the aid of the public and the Royal Dublin Society. According to a contract of 1881, the library was to operate under the supervision of a board of council, which comprised of twelve trustees, of whom four were engaged by the Irish government and eight were employed by the Royal Dublin Society.This agreement also required the trustees to appoint the staffs of the National Library.

This old arrangement was put to an end with the opening of the library as an independent cultural organization on the 3rd of May in 2005 according to the notable National Cultural Institutions Act, 1997.
