Dining at Slovenia

When you embark on Slovenia tourism and are traveling to Slovenia, you may initially think that Dining at Slovenia is all about tasting fusion food. It does look a lot like fusion food as it combines the finer elements of Hungarian, Italian, Austrian, and Balkan cooking. Italy's has the largest contribution as you will undoubtedly make out from the risottos and pastas you will hear about and see on menus and on your table. You will get excellent pizza wherever you go and this is one best thing about dining at Slovenia.

It can be pointed out about the Slovenia Cuisine that the Austrians have contributed generously with a lot many pork and other meat recipes. They do make a sumptuous combination with spinach gnocchi (njoki) sides and buckwheat (ajda) dumplings. The Balkan have done their best with grilled meats and in the common street food known as burek. Burek is a greasy phyllo pastry filled with salty cheese or meat and forms an important part of dining in Slovenia.

The national cuisine comprises of black pudding (krvavice) with air-dried ham (Kraski prsut) or polenta (zganci). A soup of beans, sauerkraut and smoked pork called jota is a hot favorite and this is something you must taste while dining in Slovenia. Another winner is rolled cake stuffed with either chocolate, walnuts, raisins or poppy seeds. It is called potica and is a national favorite. Dining at Slovenia with the regional cuisine can be best experienced in the provinces or one of the few niche restaurants in Ljubljana.

A popular regional dish is zlikrofi which consists of tiny tortellini stuffed with minced onion, potato and bacon. It is the pride of the Idrija region and well nigh impossible to find anywhere else. The sea food comprises of scampi risotto (skampi rizot), followed by grilled (na zaru) fresh fish prepared. Fresh trout with garlic and parsley (trzaska) sauce are expensive but a rare treat near the Soca river and this makes your dining at Slovenia. At any coffee shop (kavarna), ask for prekmurska gibanica. The prekmurska gibanica is a layered cake, a heady mix of cheese, curds, walnuts and poppy

We also recommend some eateries here for authentic national cuisine. You will also be able to get at these places a fairly good selection of the regional and local cuisines. We suggest that you try the regional favorites while in the provinces as the national cuisine will be available in Ljubljana too. For dining at Slovenia you can try out the eateries like Gostilna Gombac in Lipica; Gostilna Kos in Idrija; Gostilna Lectar in Radovljica and Gostilna Muha in Lipica. These are some of the best restaurants in Slovenia.
