Kolovri, Greece

Kolovri, Greece is known to be one of the most stunning islands in the country, an entry point to the colorful bays and island of Pleokastritsa. What makes this island unique is the fact that while it is extremely small in size, the island is known to offer some of the best diving spots in Europe, if not the entire world. The islands are located merely twenty five kilometers from the famous holiday spot of the Corfu city in a north west direction. While Kolovri, Greece is known for being surrounded by deep waters, the rocks seem to have appeared mysteriously amidst the waters of the sea. The Kolovri rocks are spread over an area of mere 2000 kilometers and a total perimeter of 400 meters only. But do not get mislead by the small size. For the small island offers some various great spots for diving, with a depth of more than 30 meters. Visitors to the rocks and diving enthusiasts guarantee that diving here only once will not be enough. You will come back for some more exhilarating moments.

But despite the greenery, Kolovri, Greece is also known for its large number of fish species, thriving in the waters. Some of these include barracudas, angler fish and sea squirts, among others. You can also experience the rich marine life up, close and personal in and through snorkeling. There are many shops and rental facilities available at the nearby island of Pleokastritsa. At the same time, there are several PADI instructors offering visitors courses, which can be completed within a short time of three days.
However, considering the depths of the waters, diving is not for everybody and you must have some training in the same, besides having knowledge of swimming, off course. Local folklore suggests several myths with respect to the rocks of the Kolovri, Greece. While some believe that the rocks represent the remains of the famous ship of Odyssey, another story in Greek mythology suggests that the Kolovri islands originated after a pirate ship was turned into a pile of rocks by Virgin Mary.
Besides the charming folklore associated with the island, the unique ambiance of the nearby Pleokastritsa island is sure to charm you as well. So while you are at Kolovri, Greece, make sure that you do not miss the traditional villages of Lakones, Krini and Macrades, and the beautiful monasteries of Agia Paraskevi and of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
