Pantelleria, Sicily |
Pantelleria, Sicily is one of the most unique islands, known for its unique coastline and rugged beauty. Its origins dating back to 350,000 years, the islands saw some major volcanic activity about 45,000 years ago, resulting in many natural hot springs and coves. But what makes this island unique is the fact that while the island has very few beaches, none of the existing beaches have sandy stretches along with palm trees, in the traditional sense of the term. Instead, Pantelleria, Sicily is known for the black rocky coastlines, with dropping heights, a strong wind and the azure blue waters of the ocean. There are only tiny inlets, coves and diving spots on the Pantelleria coastline, ideal for a range of ocean activities. While the islands itself are known best for their breathtaking beauty and ancient cultural and natural heritage, most people visit the island of Pantelleria to view the isles and the coves. A dip into the warm, soothing thermal springs is a must and it is guaranteed, you will come back for several more!
Though the Pantelleria islands are the largest islands of Sicily, it lies in the western most area and is located rather close to Africa. The island offers many beautiful and calm swimming spots, hidden by the jagged rocks. The sharp and dramatic coastline of the Pantelleria, Sicily are contrasted with the many caves, inlets, grottos and coves, the latter spread abundantly all over the coastline. Though it is a hard journey to these spots, it is definitely worth the visit. Despite being the largest islands, the coastlines can be viewed within an hour's drive or it can also be viewed from the sea, in one of the boat trips. Some of these inlets and caves can only be accessed in and through boats. The mystic and haunting beauty of the island draws some of the most famous personalities from all over the world. Though tourism has not made much inroads here, it is a favorite with most visitors.
