Charles Bridge refers to the historically famous bridge in Prague in Czech Republic. This famous bridge is situated on the Vltava river. The construction of this famous bridge began in the year 1357 by the King Charles IV. The bridge took almost half a century and was finished somewhere in the early part of the 15th century. At that time Charles Bridge was the only means of crossing the river Prague and it also became a very important as it connected the old town, the Prague Castle as well as the areas that were situated near the town and the castle.
This Charles Bridge also became remarkable for being the solid land connection between the regions of east Europe and the regions of west Europe. This land connection has also made Prague an important trade route at the same time. At first Charles Bridge was known as the stone bridge. It was also called the Prague bridge at some point of time. The entire bridge is rested on as many as 16 arches that are shielded with the help of ice guards. The imposing structure of Charles Bridge is protected by three bridge towers, among the three bridge towers two are situated in the lesser quarter while the third one is situated on the side of the old town.
The bridge tower that is situated on the side of the old town is well known. It is one of the most wonderful examples of the Gothic style of architecture in the world. Charles Bridge is also known for its amazing decoration which include an alley of as many as 30 statues. Most of these statues are built in the 1700s when the art pattern of Bohemia followed the baroque style.
