Dalkey Island

Dalkey Island or “thorny island”, is located at a distance of 10 miles in Dublin’s south, close to the Dalkey village, which is positioned two miles in the south of the harbor of Dun Laoghaire. There are remnants of buildings, a Martello Tower and a church in the Dalkey Island though this pictorial island is currently not inhabited by humans. Situated within 300 meters of the Irish coastline, the island covers an area of 22 acres (9 hectares). Visitors can explore this beautiful island on a rented boat.

Placed at a distance of only 5 minutes on boat from the famous Coliemore Harbor, the Dalkey Island is popular as a historic site of old remains. The ancient artifacts which have been found from this site prove that the first occupants of the island were people belonging to the Middle Stone Age or the Mesolithic Age. Evidences have also been obtained for proving the fact that the Dalkey Island was used by the occupants even in the Iron Age and the Early Christian era. These artifacts are currently on display in Dublin’s National Museum.
It can also be evidenced to be resided during the 4th millennium BC and also during the 8th to 11th century by the Vikings. Remains of a church, belonging to the 7th century, and deriving its name from that of St. Begnet, can also be found in the island. It was shifted on the eastern part of the island when its builders started using it as a place for staying while they were constructing the adjacent Martello Tower and the gun battery in the year 1804. A wooden church possibly stood here prior to the construction of the present stone building.
A defensive structure, which is known as a promontory fort, was situated along the northern limit of the Dalkey Island and it can be seen even today as a ditch. In the initial years of the 1800s, a goat herd was built but at present the replacement of the actual goats can be seen here.

A boat ride to the Dalkey Island during the summer months can be really great if you can manage a boat by requesting a local fisherman at the Bulloch or Coliemore Harbour. You can also enjoy fishing in this island as you can catch here Coalfish, Mackerel, Wrasse and Pollock in great numbers.
