James Joyce Museum

James Joyce Museum is located on an Irish Martello tower, in the pictorial village of Sandycove near Dublin. The Martello towers were built in Ireland for resisting the attack of Napoleon. This famous tower had been known as the place where James Joyce, the famous Irish author, stayed in 1904 for six nights only. The tower was leased by Oliver St. John Gogarty, university friend of Joyce, from the notable British War Office. Joyce left this place when in an incident, Gogarty directed a gunshot at Joyce.

The opening scene of Joyce’s novel “Ulysses” was set after this event and Gogarty is eternalized with the opening words of “Stately, plump Buck Mulligan”. The short stay of James Joyce gave inspiration to him for starting his trend-setting novel “Ulysses”. The platform where the gun was shot, offer a mesmerizing view and the living room in the interiors are just like that described in “Ulysses”.
The tower currently houses the popular James Joyce Museum, which is a tribute to Joyce and displays few of his personal possessions. The place is just like a pilgrimage for the fans of James Joyce, particularly on the event of Bloomsday. This auspicious day is an annual remembrance on the 16th of June in the city of Dublin and other parts of Ireland. This marks the celebration of the eventful life of James Joyce and reliving the incidents he depicted in “Ulysses”.This is one of his notable works all of these and it records the events of Joyce's life that happened on the same day in 1904 in Dublin only.
This day derives its name from the protagonist of the novel, Leopold Bloom.

Sited scenically eight miles in the south of the Dublin city along the coast road and is the perfect location for the James Joyce Museum. The collection at the museum is comprised of photographs, letters, original and hardly found editions of Joyce. “Ulysses” was started to be written on the 16th of June in 1904. On this same date, the Bloomsday is celebrated from 8 am to 6 pm along with the readings of Joyce.
