National Museum of Ireland

The National Museum of Ireland is the most important cultural association of the nation, which makes you acquainted with the true identity of the country, most of the emphasis being given by it to Irish culture, art and natural history. The section Archeology and History of the National Museum of Ireland on Kildare Street contains displays of prehistoric Ireland and are comprised of historic works in gold, treasures of the Irish churches, artifacts from the medieval, Viking and contemporary times. Exclusive displays of objects belonging to Rome, Cyprus and Egypt are also seen at this section of the National Museum of Ireland that also hosts regularly scheduled special exhibitions.

This division features rare and exclusive specimens like the Tara Brooch, the Broighter Hoard, the Derrynaflan Hoard and the Ardagh Chalice. All these specimens are outstanding representations of Irish metalwork of the early medieval period. Go through the exquisite collections of Irish Bronze Age ornaments. A beautiful porcelain vase from China dating back to the 1300s is one of the most popular exhibits here.
The Decorative Art and History section of the National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks, features beautiful and valuable artifacts like the famous Great Seal of the Irish Free State. This site was formerly a military barracks, which got its name in 1922 from Michael Collins, an Irish leader. Founded in 1997 this section also contains the administrative department of the museum, a coffee shop and a shop. The Decorative Art and History section has extensive collections of ceramics, glassware, furnishings and silver and also those of arms, money, folklife and traditional costumes.
The newest section, Country Life, of the National Museum of Ireland, founded in 2001, is sited at Castlebar in County Mayo. This new museum displays exclusive collections of folklore. The rich exhibits here are meant for introducing the visitors with the lifestyle of the rustic people of Ireland one generation back. Special staffs offer the visitors guided tours and looks after different lectures, events and outdoor activities that are associated with the collections. This section also houses temporary displays, a museum shop and a restaurant.

The section Natural History of the National Museum of Ireland is located in Dublin on Merrion Street. This section of the museum features displays of animals from all parts of the world. The Victorian presence and collection of the museum have not been distorted very much since the beginning of the 20th century.
