Rathfarnham Castle

Rathfarnham Castle is one of the top tourist attractions of Dublin in Ireland. Rathfarnham Castle is believed to be established in the 16th Century. The exact date of foundation of the castle is not known. However, recent researches have shown that it was set up in the year 1583. Rathfarnham Castle in Dublin was designed by James Stewart and William Chambers and was built for Adam Loftus, a Yorkshire man. The entrance to Rathfarnham Castle was from a village till the year 1979. After that a bypass was created by the country council.

The Rathfarnham Castle has an interesting history and had been declared as the National Monument in the year 1980. The visitors can view various exciting layers of the castle which has been uncovered during the research. One of the most prominent features of Rathfarnham Castle is the secret tunnels. One of the tunnels leads the tourists from the castle to the Castle Golf Club. The other tunnel starts from the castle and ends at the Protestant Church which is located in the village. This tunnel was discovered in the year 1987. However, both these tunnels have been closed.
Rathfarnham Castle has been passed from many families and it is mainly passed within the Loftus family. The original owner of this the castle, gave it to his son, Dudley. It was then passed to his son named Adam in the year 1616. When the castle was under the ownership of Adam, it was seized during the 1641 rebellion. The castle was able to hold itself against the attack of the Confederate army. However, the surrounding country was invaded. Adam Loftus tried to stop the fight between the English Royalists and Irish Confederates. He vehemently opposed the treaty of cessation and was imprisoned in the Dublin castle.
During the Irish Confederate Wars which took place between1641-53 Rathfarnham Castle changed several hands and came under the English Royalist troops. It remained in their hands from the year 1641 to 1647. In the year 1647, it came under Ormonde, commander of the Royalists in Ireland. After the English civil war the castle again came under the ownership of the Loftus family. Dr. Dudley Loftus who was the grandson of Archbishop Loftus became the owner of the castle in the year 1659. Various alarming stories are associated with the Rathfarnham Castle and the most horrific story is the availability of skeleton on the middle floor in the year 1880. Conservation works are going on in the castle.
