The history of the Old Town of Warsaw goes back to 13th century. Before 1339, this place was well fortified with brick walls. In the 14th century, Stare Miasto was only a small town that grew up around the castle of Dukes of Mazovia, which later on came to be known as the Royal Castle. The Market Square was established in the second half of 13th century or in the early phase of 14th century. The Market Square acts as a connecting link between the Royal Castle and the New Town in the north.
The Town Hall in Old Town was the most significant place here. The year 1701 saw the reconstruction of Stare Miasto under Tylman of Gameren. The Town Hall was reduced to dust in 1817. From 19th century the four corners of the market square was named after four famous Polish personalities who once resided here. The southern part of the market place got its name after Ignacy Zakrzewski, whereas the northern part of the place was named after Jan Dekert. The eastern part of the market square earned the name after Franciszek Barss who once lived in this corner. The western corner was devoted to Hugo Kottataj.
The popularity of Stare Miasto suffered a set back in the 19th century but it regained its importance during the First World War. In 1918, the Royal Castle was made the center of Polish politics. The castle at present is the house of Resident of Poland and other higher authorities. In 1930, the municipality of Poland shouldered the responsibility of reconstruction of Old Town which was during the Second World War. The reconstruction work began after the Second World War.

Stare Miasto today has become one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, which invites hundreds of tourists from all over the world.
