Sibiu

Located on the banks of the Cibin River, Sibiu is one of the most populous cities of Romania. Sibiu is the capital of the Sibiu County and is located in Transylvania. Before the World War II began, Sibiu was under the control of the Transylvanian Saxons. Today one can notice in the city, much of the remains of the ancient palaces and monuments built by the Transylvanian Saxons. Most of the cityscape of Sibiu consists of white walled buildings and red conic roofs, typical to any mountainous valley. The buildings in Sibiu have a castle-like look.

The city is quite close to the Fragras Mountains and the Cibin mountains. The Lotrulului Mountains are also quite close to the city of Sibiu. With the proximity of so many mountains, Sibiu city enjoys a pleasant climate through out the year. Geographically, Sibiu enjoys a strategic location. The city experiences a typical temperate continental climate. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, and the seas being far away, winters are usually quite cold in Sibiu. Summers are equally hot with occasional phases of dry season. Most of the precipitation occurs in the rainy season. Snowfall is not uncommon in winter.
According to the History of Sibiu, the city was founded in 1190 by the German settlers. Considered to be one of the earliest German cities in the world, outside Germany, Sibiu still enjoys a heavy German accent. The city is also an important seat of the Romanian Orthodox Church. After the World War I, Austria and Hungary were dissolved and majority of the Hungarians and Germans chose to shift to Sibiu. Since then Sibiu has become an unmistakable part of Romania. According to the latest census, Sibiu consists of Hungarians, Germans and Romanians. Of all these ethnic groups, the Romanians are in majority at Sibiu.
The religious constitution of Sibiu consists of people from such religious groups like Jewish, Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Reformed, Evangelical Lutheran and the Greek Catholic. Majority of the population in Sibiu is engaged in industrialization and machinery work. Health sector, education, and transportation also attract a whole lot of people. Many are also engaged in construction and commerce in Sibiu. The importance of Sibiu is such that the city is home to a significant international airport. This international airport connects Sibiu to different parts of the world. Many popular flights of Europe operate regular and direct flights to Sibiu.
